Pankratz VOGT, often listed in Catholic church records in Latin as Pancratius or Pancrati, was a shepherd in various towns along the Baden and Württemberg border. Pankratz and his family have so far been found in the records of Duttenberg, Siegelsbach and Neudenau.
Pankratz VOGT was born circa 1729 and died on July 3, 1797, in Neudenau. It is believed that Pankratz married a woman named Maria Catharina in the late 1750s and shortly thereafter they had three daughters. Maria Catharina, whose maiden name is not known, died in 1771 and was buried in Siegelsbach. About six months after his wife's death, Pankratz married Walburga BIERSCHNEIDER. Pankratz and his second wife were buried in Neudenau.
Records for Pankratz VOGT's baptism and his first marriage have not been located.
Pankratz and Maria Catharina's second daughter, Maria Dorothea VOGT, married Dominik SCHWEIGER in 1782 in Siegelsbach.
Dictionary of American Family Names:
German: occupational name for a bailiff, farm manager, or other person with supervisory authority, Middle High German voget, Late Latin vocatus, from Latin advocatus, past participle of advocare 'to call upon (to help)'. The term originally denoted someone who appeared before a court on behalf of some party not permitted to make direct representations, often an ecclesiastical body which was not supposed to have any dealings with temporal authorities.
Southern Germany, specifically what is now Baden-Württemberg.
Because our VOGT ancestry is currently limited to two generations, there are few records for the family. This small sample size has so far only shown the name spelled VOGT.
